How to check Codex usage and quota status.

AI Limit puts a local Codex usage view in the macOS menu bar, Windows tray, and terminal. It is an independent open-source monitor, not an OpenAI product and not a way to change Codex limits.

Check from the menu bar or tray

Install AI Limit on the computer where you use Codex.
Sign in to ChatGPT in the supported browser on that computer.
Open AI Limit from the menu bar or tray, then refresh to request the current status.

AI Limit uses the existing signed-in browser session first. This keeps the monitor local and avoids asking you to create another account.

Check from a terminal

Use ai-limit for a recent usage summary, ai-limit --days 1 for today, or ai-limit --detail for a per-model token breakdown.

Use the supported browser for your platform

On macOS, AI Limit can use an existing Chrome or Firefox session. On Windows, the desktop app uses Firefox for the browser-based Codex reading. If the browser session is signed out, AI Limit shows that it cannot obtain a current status rather than showing a stale value.

Privacy boundary: AI Limit reads local records and existing browser sessions. It does not upload usage data, resell account data, or operate a hosted quota service.

If a refresh shows a warning

First confirm that ChatGPT is open and signed in in the supported browser. Keeping the relevant usage page open can help the browser maintain a valid session. A temporary browser challenge can also block a current reading; AI Limit does not work around those protections.
